Who I Am: The Visionary & The Practitioner
I am Dr. Eman'on F. Wanderer, an Author of two books, a Health & Wellness Educator with a Ph.D. in Human Services specializing in Mental Health, and over 16 years of experience in community health and mental health services. I am the founder and CEO of MENHEAL, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to holistic health and community empowerment for men, and Helping Men Heal, LLC.
My journey to this work is deeply personal. I am a "Fearless Wanderer," a name I chose to reflect a life spent navigating complex identity landscapes and shedding labels to live authentically. My past professional experience includes work as a Community Health Worker and a Special Education. Assistant. This direct experience has provided a firsthand understanding of the immense emotional and psychological burdens faced by practitioners working with vulnerable populations, an issue that became the focus of my doctoral research.
My personal story, candidly shared in my "Daddy Diaries" project, details my own journey through divorce, homelessness, and depression. This period of profound personal struggle served as a "crucible of despair" that ultimately transformed my pain into my purpose. This lived experience has equipped me to be a "transparent man" and a healer, modeling a path to turning suffering into guidance for others.
My mission is to address the growing crisis of burnout and professional integrity among Direct Support Practitioners (DSPs) and other frontline healthcare workers. My research highlights a systemic failure where staff are not equipped with the personal and emotional tools needed to provide effective and ethical care. The result is high turnover, compromised client safety, and a workforce that feels undervalued and is on the verge of leaving the profession.
To solve this, I developed the Self-Mastered Practitioner paradigm, a new framework based on my "Go Within" theory. The theory asserts that a practitioner's ability to care for others is directly linked to their capacity for self-awareness, emotional regulation, and personal resilience. This philosophy is operationalized through a program called the Self-Mastery Roadmap Program, which is a curriculum designed to equip practitioners with tools for profound personal development. My program, "The Resilient Practitioner: A Self-Mastery Workshop for Preventing Burnout," directly applies this paradigm to the needs of DSPs.
This four-hour workshop is designed to help practitioners:
The case study of a client with a developmental disability ("Client Z") illustrates the urgent need for this training, demonstrating how a lack of self-mastery in staff can lead to professional dysfunction and directly harm vulnerable individuals.
